Although its name sounds like a sexually transmitted disease - Syphilis, Sylphy is actually not as bad as its sounds. With a 2700mm wheelbase, it has one of the longest wheelbase among all the C-segment models, creating a spacious and airy cabin.
Some would say the Sylphy’s exterior design is old school, not as sporty or modern as its competitors, therefore not that appealing to the younger buyers. However, it’s the details that matters. Every little bit like the placement of chrome and C-pillar quarter window made the car looks elegant and luxurious, and I do agree that Sylphy has the most luxurious design among all C-segment models, albeit not in sporty. Notice the little bulge on top of the headlights? That is for you to judge the distance of the front of Sylphy while parking. Nice touch!
The luxurious feel continued in the inside with its thickly padded seats (leather for the car I was in), beige interior with wood finishing. The dashboard, although looks a bit plain, was straightforward and easy-to-use. The rear seats are inspired by home sofa, very comfy I would say! Moreover, with the C-pillar quarter window and near-to-Camry wheelbase, you’ll feel you are sitting at the back of a big car with privacy and comfort.
On the move, the Sylphy provided a relaxing ride. On our way from Puchong to Setiawan, we first headed to highway and then into the B-road of Kuala Selangor to Setiawan. Wind and engine noise were suppressed well but I found that road noise intruded quite excessively even on normal surface. I always love Nissan’s engine, smooth delivery of power and gear changing but doesn’t ‘roar’ when we put on a heavy right foot.
However, the Altis 1.8 has more power compared to the Sylphy where it lacks of power when 3 adults, a kid and luggage were onboard. It has adequate power to keep up on the motorway but overtaking still has to be done with care and consideration. By the way, we managed to pass through national speed limit and the ride was still smooth, stable and quiet in terms of wind and engine noise.
On the B-road, Sylphy showed a slight understeer while cornering, but can be fixed easily by lowering the speed. It soaks up big bumps well too but rough patches on the road will unsettle the ride. Acceleration after stopping from a red light was a bit sluggish, but the acceleration was as smooth as always.
One thing I noticed was the centre storage area where you can put your handbag, wallet, cellphone or even water bottle, however, the base of the area is made of plastic. When the car starts moving or cornering, the things that you put inside it will move around and it might distract you while driving. Therefore, in my humble opinion, the base should be rubberised.
Safety wise, it has the usual Dual Airbags, ABS, EBD, brake assist and active head restrain. Equipment wise, it has remote trunk opening, rain and light sensor and many other luxurious amenities. Speaking about trunk, I was expecting the boot space to be huge, but it turns out to be just enough for a weekend trip outstation, would appreciate it if the boot is larger.All in all, it's a great car. However, it's not a racer's car, not for spirited driving drivers. Go for Kia Forte or Honda Civic if you want spirited driving, Toyota Altis for the balance of everything and Nissan Sylphy for status, luxury and space.
