2012 Toyota Camry coming to Malaysia in June !

The picture says it all. The leaked brochure above hinted that the all-new 7th generation Toyota Camry will be arriving at our shore in June. It will be here in the form of 2.0E, 2.0G and 2.5V!

For the first time ever Toyota is introducing a 2.5litre Dual VVT-i with ACIS engine for the Camry (nope, it's not a V6) which has 181PS and 231Nm of torque. Mated with it is a six-speed Super ECT automatic transmission with sequential shifter. It has an increase of 14PS and 7Nm compared to the outgoing 2.4litre engine. It's very close to Nissan Teana's 2.5litre V6 engine figure of 182PS and 228Nm of torque.

Meanwhile, the 2.0litre VVT-i engine has a bump of 1PS compared to the outgoing 2.0litre Camry's engine. 148PS with 190Nm of torque, but still mated with an obsolete 4-speed Super ECT gearbox with sequential shifter. Toyota should give the 2.0litre Camry a better gearbox while everyone else is using a 6-speed gearbox!

More details can be found by enlarging the specification list below:

It's great to see Toyota is giving the 2.5litre Camry a 6.1" touchscreen display with DVD, manual rear side sunshade and auto rear sunshade, and reverse camera as standard for the 2.5litre Camry, as well as side airbags. No curtain airbags available though, where I think should be standard for a D-segment car. To make a comparison, Volkswagen Passat (selling now at RM171k for CKD, might even be cheaper than the 2.5litre Camry!) has 6 airbags. Something weird is going on - no VSC?

Our version of Camry does look grand and Lexus-like, but it's still a little conservative looking to me. I prefer US version of Camry, red hot chilli pepper, perhaps a sport version?

Here's the estimated price list for 2012 Camry!

If the price list is true, than every variant of the Camry is overpriced!

*UPDATE: The 2012 Toyota Camry has arrived in Malaysia! Check out my first impression on it!

Waited for year & finally booked 2.0G. But I hesitate now as the specs given really don't worth that price.
I dislike Passat exterior, I doubt on Korean cars' quality, I worry reliability of continental cars . Finally, car is worth to buy?
If my budget up to 170k, any recommendation?

been driving Camry for good 5 years. hate it instead. especially the lagging experience when you press the pedal. also with 4 speed gear box it is way too outdated .handling also is also so_so. feel like driving bigger waja really :-).

for 160k better get golf tsi , solid, fast, fully equipped, German technology etc . and spacious too !

Anonymous: I would go for a Passat this time around.

Ari: really? a bigger waja sounds a bit sad for the Camry XD

Camry is not a racing car, it is more for comfort not super speed.
4 speed gear box is really reliabile and proven so why go for more speed gearbox that could be more problematic.
That is the selling point.

SiMon Har said...

but this 4-speed gearbox has been around since the 2002 Camry, it's a decade old... Toyota should put in a more advance gearbox which is made by themselves (so reliability is proven).

Difference car owners have different wants.
Someone would like to have a reliable proven gearbox that do not need to incur extra cost of replacement or overhaul. The spare new one could also be obtained cheaply from the mass production instead of newer one if down.

I personnally would like to purchase product that have sufficiently tested and proven by the pioneer group first, and not pursuing the latest technology at the higher cost.

Though albeit less fuel efficient at the moment, it would not hit the pocket hard if the latest trans or hybrid does not stand long for its performance or reliability.

what do you think of new passat cc?

SiMon Har said...

Passat CC is a great car, but it's in different segment compared wit Camry...

Anonymous said...

As compared with Nissan Teanna, I prefer Teanna as it is a very realible, worth the money spent, and has great deal of accessaries added in the 2.5 model.

Wake up man and look carefully the Toyota marketing stratergy to made u to buy their 2.5v. The 4 speed gear box is a really obsolete and old technology, if you said that 4 speed gearbox is reliable, why Toyota provide 6 speed for their high end model instead of reliable 4 speed gearbox? Car technology is moving up, 2012 d segment car still using 4 speed gearbox? Who want to pay that kind of over price 160k for 2.0G. The design is more worst than the previous generation Camry. Toyota is really think that Malaysian is damn stupid and easy to be bully? Time to wake ustratergyp and go to other brand with same segment. Other brand can offer better spec and cheaper price. Toyota though they can sell good even simply cutting down spec and increase price in Malaysia Market. They need to grab $$$ all over the world to cover back all their losses for the last Tsunami and their losses in US market. Think more widely and you will know what they plan!

On a side note, it's really weird for 2 anonymous commenters commenting each other...

Yeah. It still depending individual preference at last. Only feel how crazy of the Japanese die hard fans can accept the old tech gearbox and stuck there forever. This is the good news for the japanese car maker.

Compare to Toyota Altis 1.8G spec, I think the "ALL NEW 2012" Toyota Camry 2.0G spec is way too LOW spec, OUTDATED engine and UNSAFE on less-ideal road!! Well, please see the below comparisons for the spec [pls note that despite these 2 cars is on different segment, but I'm pointing the comparison on the spec, rather on segment of the car]:

Toyota Altis 1.8G spec ----- VS ----- Toyota Camry 2.0G spec

1) Dual VVT-i with ACIS ----- VS ----- DOHC with VVT-i
(New engine) ----- VS ----- (Old & Outdated engine)
(More power & torque) ----- VS ----- (Less power & torque)
(Consume less fuel) ----- VS ----- (Consume more fuel)

2) Super CVT-i with 7-Speed ----- VS ----- Super ECT with 4-speed
(better fuel efficiency) ----- VS ----- (less fuel efficiency)
(Advance gear box) ----- VS ----- (Old gear box)

3) Safety on less-ideal conditions (such as on rainy day, slippery road & uneven surface road)
- with VSC & TRC ----- VS ----- - without VSC & TRC
(MORE SAFE!) ----- VS ----- (UNSAFE!) Hope God will bless you then!

MY PERSONAL CONCLUSION: Driving a Toyota Altis 1.8G is seems to be MORE SAFE on the road than driving a New Toyota Camry 2.0G!! Yet, you need fork-out additional RM35,000 for a LOW spec, OUTDATED engine and UNSAFE "ALL NEW 2012" Toyota Camry 2.0G!! UMW TOYOTA is very "BRILLIANT" on "hiding" the above spec comparison when come to promoting this New Camry! You don't see info of VSC & TRC in 2.5V (indeed 2.5V equipped with VSC & TRC, but not for 2.0G or 2.0E). No "comparison" info means less awareness to the potential buyer, especially those Uncles!!

Despite Camry is much better on exterior looks, but the spec of Camry 2.0G shall deserve more or less the same as Altis 1.8G since both cars is same G spec, especially the extra SAFETY feature, such as VSC & TRC that equipped in Altis 1.8G! This VSC & TRC extra safety feature might able to save your life and your passengers when you are driving on less-Ideal road conditions and on emergency situations, such as on rainy day, slippery road & uneven surface road. Is UMW TOYOTA trying to IGNORE extra safety of the driver and the passengers of new Camry 2.0G !? while put EXTRA ATTENTION of extra VSC & TRC safety on the driver and the passenger of Altis 1.8G instead!? The price of VSC & TRC is just mere few thousand Ringgit only! Of course, the rationale behind by not equip VSC & TRC on Camry 2.0G is make EXTRA profit on D-Segment car for UMW TOYOTA lah!! more UNTUNG lah!!

Well, I'm also a Toyota car owner at the moment. But to upgrade to this New Camry, I would put on hold until UMW TOYOTA upgrade the spec of this Camry or look for some other cars. Simply Not worth buying this New Camry at these kind of LOW spec and OVER-PROFIT TAKING by UMW TOYOTA!

In fact, couples of days ago, one Toyota salesman told me that there was quite number of cancellation of booking order for this Camry 2.0G. Simply b'cos the potential buyer disappointed with this LOW spec Camry. To buy 2.5V with HIGHER spec is overpriced at RM181K!

SiMon Har said...

Ya, Camry should have VSC like what I wrote in the article. It's actually a step backward for them to exclude VSC this round.
But in a crash, I would say Camry's chassis will fair better than an Altis :)

Flyguy70 said...

Although Camry's chassis shall be better than an Altis. However, if driving on less ideal road and emergency situation, Camry 2.0G is on higher chance going to be "Crash" whereas Altis 1.8G might able to escape that "Crash" as Altis 1.8G is equipped with VSC & TRC extra safety feature that stablise back the car and avoid the "Crash"!

Hey Simon what do u think about Honda accord 2.4..?

SiMon Har said...

Anonymous: It's also a respectable D-segment sedan, but buyers who choose Accord might because of its sportier design or prefer driving experience over comfort. It's all depends on the preference of each individual :)

Heya! I just wanted to ask if you ever have any
issues with hackers? My last blog (wordpress) was hacked and
I ended up losing a few months of hard work due to no back up.
Do you have any solutions to prevent hackers?
